Teaching the Test.

Well, today we were informed that there will be no social studies instruction. There will be no science instruction. Reading will be a 60 minute block. And Math…

Math will be 180 minutes.

Math, because, MATH is low hanging fruit. If we can improve our math scores, then maybe we will be able to get our provisional accreditation back. Who cares about accreditation if our kids cannot read when they finish the third grade?

   …and that’s how the true achievement gap prevails (8th grade science teacher). The incentives for this are clear, but the long-term effects are a sad shame.

   I just found this from the homepage slider. 180 minutes? Of math?? For elementary school??? And I thought 100 minute blocks in high school were bad enough..

     We’ve been doing this for a few weeks now and I still have not seen my students make significant gains in math. They are bored and tired. Then when we get to our reading block, they jump for joy! (Never thought that would happen!)
